At seventeen, Bernie Ilagan was both a civil engineering student and a church leader. While working for his college degree, he also worked as a substitute teacher in a science high school in Cavite. His church work remained an important part of his life so much so that he considered working full-time in the ministry right after college. But his financial situation did not allow for it to happen. And so for the next ten years, Bernie would be seen working hard and rising through the ranks until he became an area manager for a large reputable restaurant chain in the country. It was at this workplace where he met his wife to be, Ahira.
In spite of his success in the secular world, the work of the Lord remained in his heart. In that same 10 year period, Bernie planted a church in his hometown which made him realize that he needed to increase in the knowledge of God’s word. And so he pursued his studies until he earned his bachelor’s degree in Pastoral Ministries.
A driven man such as Bernie had to step on the brakes when his journey comes to an intersection. Making the decision as to where to turn could be very difficult. Sometimes, it could even be traumatic. Holding church service on Sundays inside the work place, particularly at a restaurant, is always a problem and it became a big one for this church man.
Which road to take when in an intersection was never hard to figure out as far as Bernie was concerned. He knew exactly what he wanted most in life, and that is to serve God. He and Ahira decided to become restaurateurs themselves. Holding church services in a chicken restaurant was no longer a problem.
Bernie Ilagan continued to honor God by pursuing his studies. He earned his second bachelor’s degree this time in Ministries and his master’s degree in Theology. His customers continue to keep coming back. Today, he can be witnessed pastoring his church, Reformed Christian Life Church, and yes, still studying. He is on his way to earn his second master’s degree, this time in Christian Education.
Pastor Bernie Ilagan met Lambat in late 2010. After studying the Biblical Christian Worldview material, he taught it straight away to his congregation. He is so thankful that through our materials, the worldview of his church members is being grounded on what is true, good and right.
